*****************************UPDATE************************************* Ethan's surgery went very well and Dr. Mill told the family that it went as well as it could have gone. Ethan has passed a very important milestone, but there are still challenging times ahead.
However, the next 24 hours are critical and we would like everyone to continue praying!!!
God Bless you all for your continued support of this family. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ethan's surgery began at 8am this morning and could take anywhere from 5-9 hours. Because the doctors must concentrate on the procedure and all hands are needed, it is not likely that the family will get many updates during that time. Please pray for peace during this very long day! For more specific prayer requests, please visit the Prayer Requests section. We will update the site as soon as we hear from the family. Ethan is now in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and is preparing for his first heart surgery which will take place tomorrow morning. The team plans to start around 7am, but due to the possibility that an OR might be needed for an emergency surgery the time is not certain.
We have decided to start the prayer chain at midnight tonight so that we can pray for the doctors and nurses in the hours before Ethan's surgery. I will get the names of as many of the doctors as I can and wil place them on the prayer list at www.milesbaby.com, but even the ones we do not know, God does.
We saw the power of prayer demonstrated with Julie's delivery Saturday morning and in the fact that Ethan is as healthy as he is. Thank you for joining us in this continue prayer journey.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ethan's arrival - Ethan Scott Miles was born at 1:01 am and weighed in at 8lbs 3oz. His immediate APGAR was 8 as was his ten-minute APGAR (scale of 10) so that is terrific!
Julie and Dan were each able to hold him for 2 minutes and he is now resting in the NICU. Dan and Julie are going to be able to go visit him in a little while.
The Miles and Garrett families wish to thank everyone for their prayers last night and throughout Julie's pregnancy. They know that difficult times lie ahead, but they also know God and his people in the body of Christ will be there to support the family through those times. 1am - Ethan is here! 9pm - Juile's heart rate is better now, but her progression has slowed so we need prayers that labor will move along. Thanks for all your dillignet prayers! 7:30pm - PRAISE GOD! Julie is now 7cm dilated and the doctors are willing to let her labor continue. Her heart rate has slowed some, but continued prayer is need that things move along quickly and that Ethan is born quickly and safely. 7pm - Doctors have just told Julie that if something doesn't change very quickly that they will be doing a c-section. Julie very much wants to avoid that, so please pray that God turns the situation around right. Thanks! 6:45pm Update - Julie's heart rate is spiking and the doctors do not know what is causing it, although it could be a blood clot which would be dangerous. Julie needs prayer that her heart rate slows down and that her labor progresses quickly so that Ethan can be delivered quickly and without complications. Update - Julie is now dilated to about 4 centimeters and 80% effaced. Her water broke around noon. She did receive an epidural and hopefully will be feeling no pain soon! Julie will be going in to the hospital the evening of Thursday August 9th to began inducing labor. We will be starting the 24-hr prayer chain at 6am on Friday morning! Please join us in praying for Dan and Julie and the safe arrival of baby Ethan Scott Miles! We will post updates as they become available. Through ultrasound technology, doctors have diagnosed Ethan with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). The tab on the left will tell you more about that condition and what it will mean for Ethan. This website will be used to coordinate care for the family, to raise support including prayer, emotional, physical and financial. It will also serve to update volunteers. To read Dan and Julie's Blog page and for updates on Julie's pregnancy and baby Ethan please visit www.ethanmiles.com ************************************************************ This is Dan and Julie Miles, long time attenders and members of Crossroads Fellowship in Raleigh, NC. Dan is the youngest son to Monte and Barbara Miles. Julie is the oldest daughter of Dr. Mike and Rhonda Garrett. This precious couple is faithful to their church and the Call of Christ. They met at their former place of employment "Edible Art Bakery". They became engaged and were Wed on July 27, 2002. In late 2006 they became pregnant carrying the baby into the second trimester. This was a great joy to be beyond the high risk of miscarriage. Waiting in anticipation to know the sex of their child the ultrasound tech found something wrong. Their son had a heart defect. After being sent to Rex hospital for a high level ultasound they discovered what we know to be hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). They then began a whirlwind journey of hospitals, echocardiograms, doctors, care coordinators, etc. Never once losing faith in God, they persued his will. They settled at UNC hospital in Chapel Hill for the delivery and necessary heart surgery soon after birth. There will be a series of 3 surgeries required over the next 4 years. The first to be done 5-10 days after birth holds a 70-80% chance of survival. Then a second surgery will be done at 3-5 months of age, once he makes it to this surgery he will have a 80% chance of survival. The third surgery will take place between 2-4 years of age and holds a 90% survival rate. If they can stay on the same insurance plan each surgery will be a minimum of $5000. If not there will also be the added expense of COBRA Insurance. This does not include travel expenses, food or lodging for the family. There is hope that they will be able to stay at the Ronald McDonald house during the surgery but there is no guarentee. We are asking for your prayer support the most. There is a sign up on the website for a 24hr prayer chain for the birth and first surgery. Please also take a moment to ask God if he would have you donate any time to helping with support measures for the family. Should you like to be included in email updates please email LeahMWelch@aol.com and put in the subject line "Miles updates."
